Performs laboratory assays and complex experiments to elucidate novel research questions. The Ma Lab studies integrin signaling in blood cells. Integrin family receptors deliver bidirectional signaling (inside-out and outside-in) across the cell plasma membrane, modulating cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation, and other functions. Integrin signaling involves a series of molecular events within cells that enable integrins to bridge the crosstalk between the extracellular milieu and cytoskeletal changes, as well as cytoplasmic signaling cascades. Integrin activation is tightly regulated by integrin cytoplasmic tail binding proteins (ICBPs). The interaction between integrins and ICBPs defines the activation states and functional activities of integrins. Dysfunction of...

Performs laboratory assays and complex experiments to elucidate novel research questions. The Zhu Lab is primarily focused on unraveling the mechanisms of receptor transmembrane signaling. Specifically, our attention is directed towards cell surface receptors featuring single transmembrane domains, such as integrins, receptor tyrosine kinases, and receptor-like tyrosine phosphatases. Through a multidisciplinary approach encompassing structural biology, protein engineering, biochemistry, and cell biology techniques, we aim to elucidate how these receptors transmit signals across the cell membrane. Our investigations center on understanding the conformational regulation triggered by ligand binding at the extracellular domain or cytoplasmic domain stimulations. Our goal is to illustrate...
