Position Summary

The Versiti Blood Research Institute Core Laboratories have an opening for a Research Technologist in Histology.  The position could be at the Technologist I, II, or Senior Technologist Level depending on the experience of the successful candidate. The Research Histologist will work closely with Principal Investigators and their research staff to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis. Standard histologic techniques include grossing, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining of samples. Familiarity cutting frozen sections of tissue on a cryostat is preferred especially with bone marrow and brain tissue from experimental animals like mice.

 

Position requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and demonstrated experience in research histology. Completion of an accredited histotechnology program is desired but not required. This position will report to the Director of VBRI Core Laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • Works with Principal Investigator to plan and structure research experiments to elucidate research aims.
  • Executes laboratory experiments specific to aims of research.
  • Troubleshoots assays and customizes experimental tools to answer research questions.
  • Coordinates external and internal resources necessary for completion of research plan.
  • Provides direction to Research Technologists and Trainees.
  • Generates clear and complete records of experimental work.
  • Communicates results of research at meetings.
  • Participates in publication and presentation of research.
  • Adheres to BCW, Bio-safety, NRC, and OSHA procedures and regulations.
  • Attends required laboratory and research meetings.
  • Maintains currency with information relative to the field of research being performed.
  • Operates, calibrates and performs routine maintenance on specialized research equipment.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, media or stains necessary for experimental procedures.
  • May maintain or assist with inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • May prepare requisitions for ordering supplies and equipment.
  • Performs other laboratory duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry or equivalent scientific discipline required
  • Master's Degree preferred

Experience

  • 1-3 years relevant research or medical laboratory experience beyond receipt of degree. required
