Position Summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Tissue Donation Educator (TDE) is responsible for screening potential tissue donor referrals from hospitals and other agencies throughout Wisconsin. TDE facilitates all aspects of the tissue donation process to provide high quality and safe allograft tissues for transplant as well as the development of training programs and materials for the Tissue Donations Coordinators.

Responsibilities

  • Develops training program and leads training of newly hired Tissue Donation Coordinators
  • Develops preceptor training program and ensures preceptors are training staff effectively
  • Collaborates with other department Educators to develop organization wide training, on- boarding of new staff, and preceptor training programs
  • Identifies focus areas for education and training
  • Develops and conducts annual competencies and ongoing education for Tissue Donation Coordinators
  • Maintains education records for Tissue Donation Coordinators
  • Participates in quality assurance of donor charts and referrals
  • Evaluates potential tissue donors through medical chart review, staff interviews, and medical examiner/coroner reports using predefined criteria.
  • Presents tissue donor evaluations to affiliated tissue processing and/or research agencies.
  • Obtains both legal informed authorization for tissue donation and a thorough medical and behavioral health history on potential tissue donors.
  • Dispatches Tissue Recovery team for surgical recovery of tissues.
  • Follows communication protocols to ensure effective interactions with stakeholders including Funeral Homes, Medical Examiners and Hospital Staff.
  • Maintains records of all tissue referrals and donors and ensures all necessary information is shared with tissue processing facilities.
  • Obtains records necessary to complete donor chart including final autopsy reports, laboratory results, etc.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in various donation related community activities/events as assigned.
  • Maintains competence through attendance at mandatory and other job-related educational opportunities.
  • Actively participates in Lean and continuous improvement activities.
  • Follows applicable laws, regulations, standards, policies and procedures that impact specific job responsibilities and functions and performs assigned job functions in accordance with them to include those set forth by AATB (American Association of Tissue Banks), FDA (Food and Drug Administration), AORN (The Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), and JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations).
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a related healthcare field required
  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in a related healthcare field required
  • Equivalent combination of education and related clinical (or commensurate) experience (3-5yrs) may be substituted for the degree with the approval of Tissue Bank Management and Human Resources preferred

Experience

  • 1-3 years of experience in a health care, science, or funeral home field required
  • Experience in a tissue bank/donation setting preferred
  • Experience working with grief, loss or end of life care preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office and the internet for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Attentive to detail and ensures accuracy in completing paperwork.
  • Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task in challenging and stressful situations utilizing conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and rapport-building skills including the ability to listen actively and respond with empathy, tact, and sensitivity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a professional and courteous demeanor.

Licenses and Certifications

  • American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) certification required within 3 years of hire required
