Position Summary

Under the direction of the Laboratory Directors of Diagnostic Hematology (Hemostasis, Molecular Oncology & Genetics, and Platelet & Neutrophil Immunology) provides specialized scientific, technical, and clinical support to the Hematology Laboratories as well as collaboration with medical directors and laboratory operations; contributes expertise and project management related to clinical and contract research, product development and specific strategic initiatives. Delegated under CLIA to provide scientific and technical consultation for test results, review and sign-out of patient reports, staff training, and operational support, driving innovation, continuous improvement, and collaboration. This position requires technical expertise and interpersonal skills, as it involves interactions with healthcare professionals across various disciplines to enhance efficiency and patient care.

Responsibilities

  • __Clinical and Scientific Leadership__ • Maintains proficiency in scientific advances and laboratory techniques relevant to hematological and immunological disorders, and ensures own ongoing professional development through publications, presentations, and professional meetings. • Provides technical and scientific support to a diverse team of clinical laboratory technologists to ensure the highest levels of patient care and regulatory compliance. • Under direction/delegation of laboratory directors and medical directors provides consultation and interpretation for test results, serving as an expert resource to our clients. • Co-authors scientific publications and presents internally to lab staff and at the national level to contribute to scientific knowledge and to reflect the expertise and innovation of Versiti.
  • __Product Development and New Test Implementation__ • Partners effectively with the Product Development (PD) team to identify, evaluate, and help implement opportunities for new technologies and/or tests that will add value to customers and patients, and independently coordinates their development, validation, and operational implementation. • Serves as an expert resource for contract research projects. • Evaluates and recommends suppliers for equipment, software, and/or reagent purchasing.
  • __Laboratory Operations__ • Contributes to strategic planning to ensure compliance/service excellence/innovation/cost effectiveness in the lab. • Helps ensure that lab tests can be sustained from a training/competency/operational perspective. • Serves as a technical resource to the laboratories for problem solving and process improvement. • Participates in rotation for review and sign out of final test results and closes out Customer Relationship Management (CRM) events as assigned. • In partnership with lab technical staff, monitors performance of tests and methods, and initiates action when inconsistencies or problems are identified.
  • __Staff Support and Leadership__ • Provides leadership, mentoring, coaching, and guidance to laboratory teams. • Supports and promotes a culture of open, productive communication and responsibility in the laboratories. • Contributes to staff development and mentoring in science, technology, and leadership, to include, ongoing learning and development of personnel.
  • __Customer Service__ • Develops and maintains relevant relationships with customers; communicates customer needs and issues to laboratory operations and offers solutions. • Promotes interdepartmental cooperation and respect through effective communication and problem solving by actively engaging and collaborating with both internal (VBRI, MCW) and external (industry and clinical) partners.
  • __Regulatory Responsibility____ • Responsible for performing Technical Supervisor responsibilities per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) ’88 regulations as delegated by the Medical Director and Laboratory Directors. • Maintains knowledge of proficiency testing and laboratory staff competency programs. • Develops and maintains working knowledge of College of American Pathologists (CAP) and CLIA regulations, and laboratory quality systems.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
  • Understands and performs in accordance with all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements
  • Complies with all standard operating policies and procedures

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant scientific area – immunology, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology or medical laboratory science. required
  • Master's Degree and training or experience preferred in a relevant hematology-related discipline. in lieu of required degree
  • PhD and training or experience preferred in a relevant hematology-related discipline. in lieu of required degree

Experience

  • 4-6 years Minimum 4-years for B.S. of experience in a hematology-related field to include working in a high complexity clinical laboratory setting and training and experience in results interpretation and reporting for the specialty. required
  • 1-3 years Minimum 2-years for M.S. or Ph.D. of experience in a hematology-related field to include working in a high complexity clinical laboratory setting and training and experience in results interpretation and reporting for the specialty. in lieu of required degree
  • 1-3 years Experience in the development and implementation of new diagnostic assays. required
  • 1-3 years Demonstrated experience in writing and publishing scientific articles. required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of diagnostic hematology related to relevant disease states either bleeding, clotting, immune and functional disorders of platelets and/or neutrophils. required
  • Strong leadership skills; demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams and effect change. required
  • Effective interpersonal communication and organizational skills. required
  • Strong analytical ability to evaluate and ensure accuracy and quality of data. required
