Position Summary

Provide transfusion medicine (TM) clinical care at Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin and its associated hospitals in the scope noted below, as well as effort in leadership of the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) as Medical Director at Versiti. Key components of this position would comprise TM consultation and oversight of blood management at Versiti Wisconsin partner hospitals, as well as participation in educational initiatives and clinical/applied research within both Versiti blood centers and their affiliated health systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides medical direction, including compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and accreditation agencies, for blood center and transfusion services at Versiti and Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin affiliated hospitals.
  • Provides consultation with Versiti affiliated hospitals regarding TM clinical practice and laboratory cases.
  • Medical Director for the Versiti Wisconsin IRL, providing clinical case review and consultation, oversight of IRL laboratory staff technical duties and working with Versiti laboratory management to provide education and skill advancement.
  • Directs and/or leads blood utilization and blood management projects at Versiti and their partner hospitals.
  • Provides consultation and guidance for blood component and factor concentrate utilization at Versiti partner hospitals.
  • Consults with regional and out-of-region physicians regarding issues of laboratory testing, laboratory medicine, and transfusion medicine.
  • Partners with the diagnostic laboratory product development team to develop innovative diagnostic solutions in immunohematology
  • Participates in clinical and/or applied research at Versiti, or partner hospitals, and publishes in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Fosters education of associates, as well as medical and lay persons through participation in Versiti educational offerings and activities.
  • Maintains a high level of professional expertise in transfusion medicine, laboratory medicine, hematology, and other areas of medical expertise with demonstration of ongoing continued medical education in the field.
  • Serves on appropriate Versiti committees and in other professionally-related local, regional, and national opportunities.
  • Maintains a high level of community involvement and Public Relations outreach efforts.

Qualifications

Education

  • M.D. or D.O. Degree required

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in both 1) pathology/laboratory medicine or hematology and 2) transfusion medicine. required
  • Experience in basic, clinical, or translational research, as evidenced by publications and presentations. required
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building abilities. required
  • Knowledge and a commitment to excellence in the practice of transfusion medicine. required
  • Demonstrated potential for serving as an active collaborator who has the desire and growing skill set to guide or be a resource to customer hospitals with patient blood management program initiatives. required
  • Demonstrated innovative and progressive approach to continuous improvement in areas of responsibility. required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of clinical and laboratory medicine required
  • Ability to read and interpret SOPs, state, federal, and national regulations and standards as they apply to transfusion medicine (i.e. FDA—Food and Drug Administration, AABB—American Association of Blood Banks, CAP—College of American Pathologists). required
  • Able to direct/provide oversight of a clinical laboratory. required
  • Expertise in directing procedures in apheresis and cellular therapy. required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to work within a team. required
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks and meet deadlines. required
  • Able to collaborate with other Veristi TM colleagues for standardization of applicable policies, processes and procedures throughout the system. required
  • Strong computer literacy with ability to easily interact within system based electronic medical records. required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Board certified in pathology (AP/CP or CP only), internal medicine, or pediatrics (with subspecialty boards in hematology) required
  • Board certified in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine (American Board of Pathology--ABP) required
  • Current or eligible for medical licenses in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio required
