Overview

The Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI), located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is an academic center for innovative research in hematology to improve health. VBRI science spans the entire research spectrum, from basic mechanistic inquiry to clinical-translational and population-based research. The VBRI currently houses 25 principal investigators with five focus areas- Hematopoiesis, Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Transfusion Medicine, Immunology, and the Translational Glycomics Center. The VBRI has started a significant expansion of its research capacity, with the goal of adding 18 new PIs over a 5–7-year period. Designs for a new 60,000 – 80,000 ft2 research building are under development, with completion anticipated for late 2025. With the recruitment as the new Director of the VBRI and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Michael Deininger, a world-renowned expert in myeloproliferative neoplasms, we have commenced a rapid expansion with a renewed emphasis on malignant hematopoiesis.

Position Summary

We seek to enhance our research program in malignant hematopoiesis. Areas of interest include but are not limited to clonal hematopoiesis, leukemia, metabolism, computational approaches, lymphoma, and myeloid malignancies. Investigators at all academic ranks with a research program focused on malignant hematopoiesis are encouraged to apply. Physician-scientists and researchers with a focus on glycobiology are strongly encouraged to apply. These positions provide attractive start-up packages and outstanding opportunities for collaboration with basic, translational, and clinical investigators. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. The VBRI is located on the same campus as the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and Froedtert Hospital, which facilitates collaboration, provides additional research breadth, and enables access to graduate students. VBRI faculty typically hold an appointment at MCW, including clinical departments, to facilitate translational research. Physician-scientists who apply will be embedded within the appropriate clinical programs on campus based upon their specialty and expertise.

Responsibilities

Entirely focused on hematology, the VBRI provides a unique environment for hematology research, reflected by its long record of scientific excellence and innovation since its founding over seventy years ago. The VBRI is strategically strengthening its programs in malignant hematology to promote both mechanistic and clinical-translational science. We are committed to impactful, rigorous science that can change lives.

Qualifications

Eligible candidates will have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Candidates with existing NIH or equivalent funding are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have track records of creativity and productivity, a desire to integrate into our exciting, collaborative, and growing community of researchers, and a dedication to contributing to our values of diversity and openness. They will be expected to expand a productive and innovative research program, grow their portfolio of extramural funding, and participate actively in education, training, and mentorship. The VBRI works to attract, design, and retain a diverse workforce and faculty body that reflects the community we serve. We believe that societal change requires actions, not words, and are deeply committed to diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and thought to advance excellence in science and medicine.
